Glass and Your Office Lobby Design

Admin • Feb 14, 2020

Architects put a lot of thought into the lobby when they design an office. This attention is warranted since the reception area creates lasting impressions for your customers. Lobby styles can range from elegant to comfortable. However, the goal is always to create a welcoming atmosphere for your clients. Custom glass can help you create a lobby that is both appealing and unique.

Glass-Topped Reception Desk

The reception desk is one of the most important aspects of your front lobby. It will probably be the biggest piece of furniture in the space. Therefore, it will drive the ambiance of your reception area.

Many companies opt for unique reception desks. You can see ones that appear to be stacked logs, while others look like concrete slabs. Even if the reception desk is standard, companies often choose to top the desk with glass.

Glass features many qualities that are desirable for the reception desk. For one, it's a non-porous material. So, even ink spills from a malfunctioning pen won't stain the surface. Likewise, glass surfaces are easy to clean. It's also a convenient surface if customers need to fill out any paperwork or sign receipts.

Glass-Topped Client Tables

Another key for any lobby is comfortable seating. Naturally, the glass will not provide this seating. However, as your clients are relaxing in the waiting area, they will likely want to set their belongings down. Glass-topped tables can provide that surface.

The concept here is similar to the one with the reception desk. For one, table styles vary both according to your décor style and your given space. However, glass provides an easy surface that doesn't scuff or stain no matter what your waiting clients do to it - or spill on it.

You might look into customized tables with a well between the glass and the tabletop. You can place literature or images related to your company under the glass. You can also opt for tables over which the glass hovers with a reachable space in between, a little like a cubby. This design would be ideal for the placement of magazines or even books related to your business.

Glass-Fronted Wall Image

Office lobbies are the first concrete space for you to promote your brand. You definitely want your lobby to stand out. One method for achieving this goal is to hang a glass-fronted image on a blank wall.

This idea can work in numerous ways. If your target ambiance is cozy, you can have an appealing image related to your business blown up and fronted with the glass. If you're targeting a younger crowd, look for a neon image or even a word related to your business. You can also hang a sheet of glass over your logo.

Glass's protective qualities come into play in this application, too. However, you're also looking at the reflective qualities, especially if you choose a lighted image. Glass will reflect the light and make your chosen image or word stand out. Even just fronting a simple image that relates to your business makes the picture - and by extension your business - feel special.

Glass Dividers

You often have to work within a given space for your reception area. Another principle of lobby design is the facilitation of traffic flow. Because of space limitations, you may have to incorporate dividers, either to separate your receptionist or to guide clients.

Glass is an ideal material for this endeavor, too. For instance, if you need to create a cubicle for your receptionist, glass is the traditional material so they can see clients coming in. These cubicles can also incorporate some opening so the receptionist can speak with customers.

Perhaps you need to delineate work areas from waiting areas. You can do so with glass dividers. These dividers come in a range of styles. In offices, you commonly see floor-to-ceiling glass with glass doorways. You can also have movable dividers installed in case you need to reorganize the lobby for meetings or receptions.
